The incident began around 1:45 p.m., Tuesday, June 4, when a window at CPR Cell Phone Repair, located at 45 Merrick Road, Amityville, was shattered by a bullet, said the Suffolk County Police.
People nearby, including employees of the phone store, heard the gunshot and called 911.
Seconds later, a person witnessed cars racing north of the location and heard additional shots fired, police said.
The witness called 911 and a 30-year-old man was found on Homestead Avenue, near Orchard Street, with gunshot wounds to the head.
A person running from the scene was briefly detained and released.
The victim, who has not been identified, was transported by Amityville Rescue to a local hospital where he is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries after undergoing surgery Tuesday night, police said.
Detectives believe the incident was not random and are investigating whether the dispute was between gang members or related to a drug deal.
Immediately after the shooting and during the search, Amityville and Massapequa schools at Homestead Avenue and Orchard Street were placed lockdown until 3:45 p.m.
Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call Homicide Squad detectives at 631-852-6392, or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
